宋Vague Yuanzhen, courtesy name Zizhi, styled Zhongwen, was a politician and literary figure from the Southern Song. Born in 1125 and dying in 1180, he was the son of Zhao Tingzhi, a chancellor of the Northern Song, placing him in a prominent bureaucratic family rather than the imperial clan. His career was marked by early demotion due to his father’s political associations, followed by a restoration to favor. A staunch advocate for the "war party" during the transition to the Xiaozong court, he actively supported the campaign to recover the lost north, serving in roles such as Academician of the Hanlin Academy and Minister of Rites. His literary works, characterized by a somber and resonant style, often expressed personal grief and concern for the nation’s fate. While his military outcomes were limited, his political courage and the depth of his poetry, such as "Hearing the Horn," earned him a reputation for loyalty and integrity as a key figure in early Southern Song resistance against the Jin.
